“Big red flags are places that don’t let you visit, places that are negative about breastfeeding, and places that have safety violations that you can see are wrong.”

“Talk to and visit at least three providers’ homes or centers. Don’t be afraid to ask strange, obvious, or controversial questions. Such as:

Do you hold the infant/child while they’re having a bottle or prop the bottle up for them? (I actually asked this question after interviewing a day care provider who actually told me she props the bottle up—very bad.)

How do you handle a crying child who can’t seem to be soothed?

How long do you let the child go before changing a diaper with a bowel movement? Are they changed on a schedule or as needed?

Do you help potty train?

What is the diapering routine? Do you use gloves? How do you dispose of the diapers?

What is your policy on spanking or discipline in any form?

Does the day care provider allow toy guns to be played with in her home?

Do you allow pumped breast milk? (Not generally an issue here in California, aka “granola state,” but in some states, I’ve heard it’s an issue.)

Are there any pets in the home? Are the pets current on shots? Have the pets ever attacked anyone?

Are there any smokers in the home?

Are you on a funded food program? (They require healthy eating and records to prove it.)

Does the provider have any children of her own? Ages? If applicable, have they ever been in trouble with the law (thinking molestation, child abuse, etc.)?
